Why a person should visit and use the local library

I remember getting my first library card at the age of 10 at the Bucks County Library System Fallsington, Pa Branch. It was right up the street and easy to get to. Age ten was about the time that I really started reading other things then comic books and stuff for school. The library had the complete collection of the Hardy Boys novels. I read all of them one summer, usually 2 a day.

So do you have a library card? If not why? With the way the economy is these days the library is the place to go. I spend a few hours a weekend at book stores just browsing and taking it easy. I rarely buy many books though…I write down the names of books that look interesting and then go to the library and just check out the book. If they don’t have it I try for an inter library loan.

Tired of paying for movie rentals…guess what go to your local library and see what they have. They probably won’t have the most recent releases but they may have a few you haven’t seen yet from last year or a few months ago.

That library card also can get you on the Internet, most libraries have free Internet terminals for there library card holders. This service is also available to non residents for a slight fee. I always tell people who are traveling in the USA that if you are in a bind and have to get on the Internet to always check out the local library.

Remember that the library is a great place to do research on things as well as a quiet place to do work. When I need to get out and work on projects with very little distractions I go to the library. Some libraries are starting to add coffee shops so if you have one of those what more can you ask for. The coffee at libraries is usually cheaper then at the local coffee shop so another savings.

Also check out the events or meetings being held at your library you may find out there is a group meeting about your favorite hobby or computer operating system.

So lets run down why you should visit you local library and why you should have a library card:

  1. Free books to read
  2. A place to rent movies at no cost
  3. Free Internet if you are a resident of the area (small fee if you aren’t)
  4. Great place to do research and work

I have only listed a few of the benefits of the local library and each library is different. So go visit your local library and see what is available. Hey your taxes are funding it so it’s yours to use.

Supermarket Update

This is a quick follow up on my post about looking for a new supermarket. We checked out about 3 other supermarkets in the area. The Shop Rite on Pennington Circle, the Stop & Shop and the Shop Rite on Olden Ave.

The Shop Rite on the circle was small but had a good produce and meat section, but it was a little dirty. The Shop Rite on Olden Ave was big and way to busy. The main problem with this store was that people would come to a complete stop in the middle of the aisles and have conversation with firends ad I guess family and disregard anyone trying to get by.

The Stop & Shop is the final place we tried and have picked it as the new supermarket of the Bilancio family. It’s clean the prices are better then Acme and it seems no one ever goes there. :) Carolyn and I have been there at different times and there has never been a crowed…we get through shopping much faster then at Acme and the prices are much less. The produce section is good and the meat department has had the cuts I have needed and wanted for the things I am cooking.

I am always interested in other places to buy food in the Lawrence Township area so if you have a favorite place let me know.

What is your “thing”?

I came home last night and my daughter was going on about how she didn’t have a “thing”.  I asked her what my “thing” was and she said my “thing” was computers…. Well I let that go, but it made me start thinking about my “thing”….was it really computers or something else?  Is your “thing” define by what you do or what makes you happy?  I sat up a little bit last night trying to figure out the answer to those questions…..I think it’s what makes me happy.

So on the way to work and dropping Avery off at school I figured out that I have had many “things” so far in my life.  Computers might be my thing now but it will always be radio right to the sunset of my life that will be my true “thing”.  If I could get a radio job that pays the same amount I am making now…..but also lets me program my own music and not follow some format mandated by some person working for the man, but that’s another post.

I explained to my daughter that it took me a long time to get my “thing” in life.  I don’t remember many people who had a “thing” when they were freshmen in high school and that eventually she will find her “thing” and that it will change as she gets older and the first “thing” might not be her “thing” later on.

This is my off year but I feel I should discuss colonoscopys with you……

I haven’t written in a long time. I have been busy with work aqnd the
stuff around the house and with the dog. I was looking for information
today on the big Internet on something and came across this great
review on a Colonoscopy. I am required to get one every 2 years because
colon cancer runs in my family on my mothers side. , but this is my
year off. I only go on even years. I had my first one in 1986 right
after graduating from high school…like the next day. Back then they
didn’t knock you out and it was not a pleasent experiance so I vowed
never to get another one. Well when I turned 37 I decided it was tme to
go again so I geared up for the unpleseantness of it, but now it’s like
taking a nap and waking up and not knowing anything happend. The prep
the day before is still a pain in the ass (no pun intended) but once
you get through that and finally get into the surgical center it is a
piece of cake. So for the PSA part of this post get out there and get a
colonoscopy to make sure all is good with your colon and go read this
review of this guys colonoscopy…it’s very simple these days and pain free.

What a week/month

Well this week has been a traumatic one in so many ways. The shooting at Virgina Tech, I have friends down there as well as family in the area.

Then Don Imus was fired last week…I use to skip class when I was in college to hang out at the radio station I worked for to listen to him on the satellite feed between news casts. It was cool because during the comers breaks they would just leave the mic open and you would hear Imus conversations with the rest of the crew it was fun. I think the whole Don Imus fiasco was blown out of proportion, but that was just me.

Then today I found out a program director I worked for in Corning Dave Abby died from brain cancer last month. He was only 54. He was a good guy who cared about his announcers and the station.

The weather in this area was horrible this week. We had a nor’east come through here on Sunday and Monday that caused a ton of flooding. My basement took on about 4 inches of water. Thanks to Smed and Ed for
coming over and helping me bail out the basement. But the weather has cleared up and it looks like spring may be here for good now. I need a few weeks of dry weather so the water table can go down some in the back yard and the standing water can go away…even though the dog likes to play in it.
