Gmail for the troops

I was surfing around today and stumbled onto the site gmail4troops. Since I have 6 gmail invites I can’t get rid of I have decided to donate 3 of them to the troops over seas. So if you have any extra invites think about donating a few of them so a few solders over seas can keep in touch with there families……

So ever have one of those days? 1

I have been busy the last few days working on 4 to 5 projects and just can’t seem to get them done. I am also looking for a new digital camera and can’t find the one I want to get at any of the local camera stores to just click a few shots and try it out. You would think that if the store puts it in there weekly add they would have a few in stock to sell and at least one so a potential customer could go in and try feel of the camera out.

A buddy of mine got a Canon D70 and brought it to the Linux meeting last night so I was able to play with that one a little. The feel of it was good in my hand but I didn’t like the feel of the lens he had on it. When you turned the focusing knob you it felt like plastic on plastic. But I am still thinking of the Pentax *ist D. I have read a lot of good reviews but I just can’t find one to play with.

She had rings on her fingers and
bells on her shoes,
And I knew without asking’ she was
into the blues
Scarlet begonias
tucked into her curls
I knew right away
she was not like other girls–
other girls
In the thick of the evening
when the dealing got rough
She was too pat to open and
too cool to bluff
As I picked up my matches and
was closing the door
I had one of those flashes:
I’d been there before–
been there before.
I ain’t often right
but I’ve never been wrong
It seldom turns out the way
it does in the song
Once in a while
you get shown the light
in the strangest of places
if you look at it right

If I have this much Hard Drive Space

I found this article this morning with the recommendation from Microsoft on what the “Average” Longhorn PC spec should be.

Microsoft is expected to recommend that the “average” Longhorn PC feature a dual-core CPU running at 4 to 6GHz; a minimum of 2 gigs of RAM; up to a terabyte of storage; a 1 Gbit, built-in, Ethernet-wired port and an 802.11g wireless link; and a graphics processor that runs three times faster than those on the market today.

If I have a terabyte of HD space in my machine I better be single and not have to leave the house. I know that back when I got my first PC it had 10meg drive and I thought that was allot. Now I have 250 Gig, but a terabyte of space in a normal PC that is really to much to fathom……

Yea got into the office…and other great stuff from the weekend

Yea I finally got the new computer up into the office. There is a little more trim to put up but I figured I could work around the furniture. I needed a place to myself to work on stuff. Spent most of the day on Sat. at Ikea getting a new desk for myself and one for Carolyn. I just got a big table thing and I got here a nice desk thing with 3 drawers and a big top so she can have her laptop on it and still be able to write her correspondence.

Went to Avery’s parent teacher conference and got good news. Avery brought all her grades up to the A’s & B’s from last marking period. So she got ungrounded and is allowed to watch her shows again. Still has some stuff taken away because of the clarinet thing. The teacher put it all down to introduction of knitting in the class. I like to think that my kid is smart and wants to do well…..

So that’s what’s going on…looking at getting a new scanner and a firewire drive case for external storage.

More later…..

Must be getting early
Clocks are running late
Paint by number morning sky
Looks so phony
Dawn is breaking everywhere
Light a candle, curse the glare
Draw the curtains
I don’t care ’cause
It’s all right

A few new web sites that I have going….

Well in the last 6 months I have managed to get a 2 web sites done and running. The first one was for my Linux users group LUG/IP. This one took the longest because I did it all from scratch and by hand. But I am happy with the result. Also in the process we got the group incorporated as a non-profit and are just waiting for the letter from the IRS.

The second site was done more out of frustration. I set up a site from my high school alumni. Now I know you are thinking but, William you can just go to classmates.com and do that. Yes I could but I didn’t want to keep paying a yearly subscription for it. So I found another persons web site that did the same thing and had written some software to make the web site automatically. I tweaked it a little and added a message board. So take a look at it and if you are a Haverling High School Alumni put in you info so others from Haverling can get in touch with you the address is www.haverling.org.

New Machine Design Again 3

Well I have my taxes to do and no machine to do them on so it’s time to build my machine.

Here are the specs:
Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe
AMD ATHLON 2800+ XP 512KB PROCESSOR – AXDA2800BOX.
2 512Meg Dual-Channel DDR 400 Dimms
2 Model: 6Y120M0 120GB Serial ATA SATA-150 8MB Cache 7200 RPM.
Pine PV T36KUA GeForce FX 5700 AGP 8x – 256 MB
ENERMAX SERVER CASE, W/300 WATT PS, BEIGE

I wanted to go AMD 64 but the prices are still to high. But I figured in a year or two I will up grade to one.

Now if I can just get the office done to put the machine.

Office move, Server Crash and life

I am alive and kicking. Just been real busy getting the serve back up and running. I am about 99% done with it. I still have to finish the Lavingaonline.com site. I lost the database for that one so I have decided to move it from postnuke to Movable type. No one was using any of the features except the photo gallery and back issues of the family news paper. So I moved them over and will be getting the site up either today or tomorrow.

In between all this I had to get the Harrisburg office moved into a bigger facility. I spent all day Sunday and most of the day Monday getting it done. They have everything but a connection to the Internet. I had to order a T-1 because verizon lied to the local carrier out there and then told them the day before the move that they couldn’t provide DSL because the switch wasn’t provisioned for it.

Other then that all things are going well. Once the Harrisburg thing is done I will be moving onto the XP roll out for the company and then the Server 2003 roll out after that.

Carolyn and I have also started the South Beach Diet. I am in need of losing at least 40 Lbs. I studied a bunch of the current diets. The South Beach one to me looks like the best one because it gets you eating right and doesn’t make you count calories or anything. Just really stay off the starchy foods and limit your sugar intake. We are currently in the middle of phase 1 and I am feeling a whole lot better. I have stopped drinking coke-colla for awhile so I hope that I can lose my 40 lbs.

Machine Crash

Well after a server crash on Turesday. I lost most of the web site and other personal stuff. I got it backup and working in about 12 hours. I think the CPU fan died and then trashed the main hard drive. But I was lucky enough to have spare parts at home to throw at the machine. I got most of the services back running in the last few days.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding..A Must See

Weather has been good and cool. I’ve been getting better nights sleep now that the AC is off and the fan is back in the window.

Took Carolyn out for dinner and a movie last night. Got Jule to baby sit and she and Avery got along splendidly.

We went to the China Buffet for dinner then saw “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”. I would recommend this movie big time. It was the first movie I have been too in a long time where the crowd really laughed at everything funny. It was funny and very touching. It made me think of my own family…reduce the number of cousins and aunts and make them Italian instead of Greek and you have the Bilancio’s.

Now all I have to do is write a quick review for La Vigna on line.

Work is going well I am working on the laptop and trying to get the 3com wireless card to work with Linux so I can take it home and use it on my network…more on this later.

Jabber up and Running Yea

13:30 Currently 78°F Feels like 81°F
Woo hoo got the Jabber server running and working. now I just have to slap together a quick web page explaining how to do things. Hope to get most of the family using it.

Plane on working on the Lavignaonline.com site this weekend after I redo the laptop again, this time with Mandrake 8.* .

BTW the DSL in New York is back up. I am planing on going back up on Monday for a hour or so just to get things working and back to normal. More later….
